Best Overall: Romancecar From Shinjuku to Hakone

For most visitors staying in central Tokyo, the Odakyu Limited Express Romancecar is the simplest way to reach Hakone. It runs directly from Shinjuku Station to Hakone-Yumoto, there is no change at Odawara, and every seat is reserved.

That combination of speed and simplicity is what makes it a good fit for a day trip. You start the morning sitting down with a confirmed seat instead of working out which local service to board.

Who should take the Romancecar?

Choose it if:

• you are staying near Shinjuku
• this is your first visit to Hakone
• you want the simplest journey
• you are traveling with children or luggage
• you want to maximize sightseeing time
• you are using the Hakone Freepass

How Much Does the Romancecar Cost?

There are two parts to the fare:

1. the normal train fare
2. the Limited Express Romancecar surcharge

If you already hold a Hakone Freepass covering the Odakyu journey from Shinjuku, you still buy the separate Romancecar limited-express ticket. All Romancecar seats are reserved, so this is not an optional comfort charge you can decline on the day.

Should You Reserve the Romancecar in Advance?

For weekends, Japanese public holidays, the fall foliage period, cherry blossom season, Golden Week and the popular morning trains, book ahead.

This matters more on a day trip than on an overnight stay, because the early trains are the ones you want. A seat on a mid-morning service costs you an hour of Hakone at the other end.

Cheapest Option: Regular Odakyu Train From Shinjuku

You do not have to take the Romancecar. Regular Odakyu services also run from Shinjuku toward Odawara, and you continue from there to Hakone-Yumoto.

This is the better choice when keeping costs down matters more than saving time. On a one-day itinerary, though, the reserved seat and the single uninterrupted journey usually justify the extra cost, because the time you save lands at the Hakone end of the day.

Tokyo Station to Hakone: Take the Shinkansen to Odawara

If you are staying around Tokyo Station, Ginza, Marunouchi or eastern central Tokyo, crossing the city to Shinjuku first may cost you more time than it saves.

Take the Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Odawara instead, then change to transport into the Hakone area.

Important: there is no bullet train to Hakone-Yumoto

The Shinkansen goes to Odawara. From Odawara you continue by local transport, so the bullet train is the first leg of your journey rather than the whole of it.

Is the Bullet Train the Fastest Way to Hakone?

It can be the fastest way to reach Odawara, especially from Tokyo Station. That is not the same as the fastest way to reach the part of Hakone you want.

If your day begins in Shinjuku and your first destination is Hakone-Yumoto, the direct Romancecar is usually simpler, because it removes a change of train and a walk between platforms with luggage.

Take the Romancecar.

Staying near Tokyo Station?

Consider the Shinkansen to Odawara.

Staying somewhere between them?

Compare the time it takes you to reach each departure station, not the two train journeys on their own. A thirty-minute cross-city trip to Shinjuku changes the answer.

What Happens When You Reach Odawara?

Odawara is the interchange where the Hakone area opens up. From here you can continue toward:

• Hakone-Yumoto
• Gora
• Moto-Hakone
• Hakone-machi
• Togendai
• Lake Ashi

You do not always have to go to Hakone-Yumoto first. Your best route depends on the itinerary you plan to follow once you are there.

Tokyo to Hakone by Bus

The bus is useful when it takes you farther into Hakone without routing you through Hakone-Yumoto first, which suits some hotels and the western side of the area around Togendai.

The disadvantage is road traffic. On a day trip, and particularly on busy weekends and holiday periods, rail reliability is worth more than it is on a stay of several nights: a delayed arrival takes the time straight out of your one day.

Tokyo to Hakone by Car

Driving gives you freedom, but it is not automatically the easiest option here.

For a standard sightseeing day taking in Owakudani, the Hakone Ropeway, Lake Ashi and Hakone Shrine, public transport works well, because the loop is built around transport that is itself part of the attraction. For most international visitors making a first Hakone day trip, renting a car for this journey alone is unnecessary.

What Is the Hakone Freepass?

The Hakone Freepass combines a round trip on the Odakyu network, depending on where you buy it, with extensive transport around Hakone. The official pass information lists the services it covers.

It is sold as a two-day or three-day pass, and travelers still use it for a one-day visit. What decides it is whether the transport you plan to take adds up to more than the pass costs.

Does the Hakone Freepass include the Romancecar?

Not completely. The standard journey is covered according to the conditions of the pass, and the Limited Express Romancecar surcharge is separate. Budget for it if you want the direct train.

Should You Buy the Hakone Freepass for a Day Trip?

It makes most sense when you plan to move around Hakone extensively. For example:

Hakone-Yumoto → Gora → Sounzan → Owakudani → Togendai → Lake Ashi → Moto-Hakone → Hakone-Yumoto

That route uses a mountain railway, a cable car, a ropeway, a boat and a bus. How to Get From Hakone-Yumoto to Gora

Once you reach Hakone-Yumoto, most visitors continue toward Gora. This is the start of the mountain section, and it leads on toward:

Gora → Sounzan → Owakudani → Togendai

From Togendai you continue across Lake Ashi.

How to Get to Owakudani From Tokyo

For most independent travelers:

Tokyo → Hakone-Yumoto → Gora → Sounzan → Hakone Ropeway → Owakudani

If Owakudani is your main priority, check the ropeway’s operating status before you leave Tokyo. The ropeway operator warns that weather, inspections and maintenance can suspend service, and a suspension changes the whole shape of the route above.

How to Get to Lake Ashi From Tokyo

For first-time visitors following the sightseeing loop:

Tokyo → Hakone-Yumoto → Gora → Ropeway → Togendai → Lake Ashi

Faster routes to the lake exist. Going through Gora and Owakudani gives you the mountain railway, the ropeway and the volcanic valley on the way, which is most of what people come to Hakone for.

Should You Take the Train Both Ways?

Not necessarily. Travelers continuing elsewhere in Japan can leave Hakone through Odawara and connect to the Shinkansen from there.

Hakone does not have to be an out-and-back excursion from Tokyo, and treating it as one stop on a longer route can save you a night’s accommodation.

Can You Take the Bullet Train Back From Hakone?

Yes, from Odawara. You travel from Hakone to Odawara first, then board the Tokaido Shinkansen.

This is useful if you are continuing toward Kyoto, Nagoya or Osaka on the same day.

Is It Better to Take a Hakone Tour From Tokyo?

You do not need a tour to visit Hakone. The transport chain is well signposted, and the connections are the sightseeing.

A tour becomes more attractive when you want Hakone and Mount Fuji in the same day, because that pairing is where the independent version starts to unravel: the two areas sit on different transport networks and the transfers eat the afternoon. For Hakone alone, independent travel is often more enjoyable. The Simplest Tokyo-to-Hakone Plan

If you would rather not think about it:

1. Start at Shinjuku Station early.
2. Take the Romancecar directly to Hakone-Yumoto.
3. Follow the classic sightseeing loop.
4. Return to Hakone-Yumoto.
5. Take the Romancecar back to Shinjuku.
