Owakudani Hakone: Ropeway, Volcano Valley & Mt Fuji Views
How to reach Owakudani on the Hakone Ropeway, how long to stay, the black eggs, the volcanic gas rules, the Fuji view and what to do when the ropeway is closed.
Owakudani is a volcanic valley high in the Hakone mountains, known for steaming vents, sulfurous ground and some of Hakone’s best chances of seeing Mount Fuji. For most first-time visitors it is not a separate excursion: you stop there for 45–60 minutes on the Hakone Ropeway, partway along the classic loop Hakone-Yumoto → Gora → Sounzan → Hakone Ropeway → Owakudani → Togendai → Lake Ashi.

What Is Owakudani?
Owakudani is an active volcanic area in Hakone. Volcanic activity shaped the landscape, and the ground is still geothermally active today.
You can see steam rising from the ground and smell the sulfur in the air.
Is Owakudani Worth Visiting?
Yes. For a first visit to Hakone, I would count it among the essential stops.
It gives you:
- volcanic scenery
- Hakone Ropeway views
- possible Mount Fuji views
- geothermal activity
- the famous black eggs
It also sits directly on the route between Sounzan and Togendai, so it costs you no detour.
How Do You Get to Owakudani?
The most common route is:
Hakone-Yumoto → Gora → Sounzan → Hakone Ropeway → Owakudani
The Sounzan to Owakudani ride takes about 15 minutes. From Owakudani, continue on the ropeway toward Togendai and Lake Ashi.
Can You Reach Owakudani From Tokyo in One Day?
Yes. It fits comfortably into a full Hakone day trip from Tokyo. A typical day might be:
Morning: Tokyo → Hakone-Yumoto → Gora
Late morning: Sounzan → Ropeway → Owakudani
Afternoon: Togendai → Lake Ashi → Hakone Shrine
Evening: Return to Tokyo
Our complete Hakone day trip guide covers the whole day, from the Romancecar out of Shinjuku to the bus back from Moto-Hakone.
How Long Should You Spend at Owakudani?
For most visitors, 45–60 minutes is enough.
That gives you time to walk around the main visitor area, see the steaming volcanic landscape, take photos, look for Mount Fuji and try the black eggs.
Can You See Mount Fuji From Owakudani?
Yes, on clear days. Owakudani is one of Hakone’s better Fuji viewpoints, but visibility is never guaranteed.
Go even if Fuji stays behind cloud, because the steaming valley is the main sight.
What Are the Black Eggs at Owakudani?
Owakudani is famous for eggs cooked in geothermal heat. Minerals in the hot spring water turn their shells black during cooking. Inside, they taste like ordinary boiled eggs.
Is Owakudani Dangerous?
Owakudani is an active volcanic environment, and volcanic gas levels are monitored. Access can be restricted at short notice because of gas, weather or other safety concerns.
Local guidance advises people with asthma, bronchitis or heart conditions, and pregnant women, to take particular care because of the volcanic gas. If that applies to anyone in your group, you can see much of the valley from the ropeway cabin without getting off. Everyone else should follow announcements and staff instructions and stay within the open areas.
Does Owakudani Smell Like Sulfur?
Yes. The sulfur smell is noticeable.
For many visitors, it is part of what makes the place feel so different from the rest of Hakone.
Is Owakudani Included in the Hakone Freepass?
Walking around the main visitor area beside the ropeway station does not need a ticket; you pay for the transport there and for food and souvenirs. The Hakone Freepass is useful because the Hakone Ropeway is included. Our Hakone Freepass guide works out when the pass pays off.
Owakudani and the Hakone Ropeway
The two go together. You reach Owakudani by ropeway, and the ride is part of the attraction.
For first-time visitors, think of Owakudani and the ropeway as one combined outing. Our Hakone Ropeway guide covers tickets, hours and which direction to ride.
Owakudani to Lake Ashi
After visiting Owakudani, continue by ropeway toward Togendai. The Ubako to Togendai section takes about 15 minutes. At Togendai, you can board the Lake Ashi sightseeing cruise.
This makes one of the best sightseeing sequences in Hakone:
Owakudani → Ropeway → Togendai → Lake Ashi cruise
Owakudani or Lake Ashi?
Ideally, do both.
Choose Owakudani for volcanic scenery, the ropeway, geothermal activity and Fuji views. Choose Lake Ashi for the cruise, lakeside scenery, Hakone Shrine and a slower pace; our Lake Ashi guide covers that half of the day.
On a full day trip, you do not need to choose.
Owakudani vs Mt Fuji Day Trip
If your main goal is to get close to Mount Fuji itself, Owakudani is no substitute for a dedicated Fuji day trip around Kawaguchiko and the Fuji Five Lakes.
It is a Hakone attraction with possible Fuji views.
Best Time of Day to Visit Owakudani
Late morning works very well. You can leave Tokyo early, travel through Hakone-Yumoto and Gora, reach Owakudani before lunch and continue to Lake Ashi in the afternoon.
Earlier in the day can also improve your chances of a clear Fuji view.
Owakudani in Autumn
Autumn is one of the most attractive times to visit Hakone. The surrounding mountains can be colorful, while Owakudani itself is a stark volcanic contrast.
Owakudani in Winter
Winter can be excellent for Mount Fuji visibility, because cold, dry air often gives clearer long-distance views.
Dress warmly. The ropeway also closes earlier in December and January, at 16:15 instead of 17:00.
What Should You Wear?
Bring layers. Even if Tokyo feels warm, Owakudani can be cooler, windier and more exposed.
Comfortable walking shoes help too.
Can You Visit Owakudani in Rain?
Yes, but the visit changes. Rain and cloud can hide Mount Fuji and the distant mountains.
The bigger risk is that weather stops the ropeway.
What If the Hakone Ropeway Is Closed?
If the ropeway is suspended, reaching Owakudani gets more complicated. The ropeway operator runs from 9:00 to 17:00 between February and November and from 9:00 to 16:15 in December and January, and weather, inspections or maintenance can halt it.
If Owakudani is the main reason for your trip, check the operating status before leaving Tokyo.
Can You Drive to Owakudani?
There is road access, but if you are a first-time day-tripper on public transport, the ropeway is more enjoyable and fits better into the classic loop.
Can You Visit Owakudani on a Guided Hakone Tour?
Yes. Many Hakone and Mt Fuji plus Hakone tours include Owakudani or another major Hakone viewpoint. Check the current itinerary before booking.
Two shared tours from Tokyo include a one-way ropeway ticket over Owakudani. The Clover Travel day trip costs from $49 per person and holds 4.9/5 from more than 1,100 reviews; it continues to Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai, closer to Mount Fuji. The TAIHOU shared sightseeing tour costs from $54 per person with 4.6/5 from more than 8,000 reviews; it also stops at Lake Ashi and Hakone Shrine. Pick Clover for the lower fare and the Fuji-area stops, TAIHOU if you would rather book the tour with the far larger review record. On both, the Lake Ashi cruise is an extra fee. Our Hakone tour chooser compares the rest.

For first-time visitors:
Tokyo → Hakone-Yumoto → Gora → Sounzan → Owakudani → Togendai → Lake Ashi → Hakone Shrine → Tokyo
Our one-day Hakone itinerary follows this route stop by stop.
What Should You Do After Owakudani?
Continue toward:
Togendai → Lake Ashi
That is the most logical next step, and from Moto-Hakone you can walk to Hakone Shrine.
Final Verdict
Owakudani is one of the places that make Hakone feel unique. Without it, Hakone can look like a pleasant collection of lakes, shrines and hot springs. At Owakudani, you see that the whole area is volcanic.
The plan is simple: ride the ropeway from Sounzan, stop at Owakudani, look for Mount Fuji, then continue toward Lake Ashi.
For a first-time Hakone day trip, it is one of the stops I would not skip. Check the ropeway status on the morning you travel, because gas levels and wind can close it.
