Lake Ashi Guide: Cruise, Hakone Shrine & Mt Fuji Views

Where to board the Lake Ashi cruise, where to get off for Hakone Shrine and the lakeside torii, how long to allow and what the lake looks like when Fuji stays hidden.

Updated 1 October 2026

Lake Ashi is one of the highlights of a Hakone day trip. The lake sits in the mountains of Hakone and is the centerpiece of the area’s best-known views: sightseeing boats crossing the water, Hakone Shrine in the forest on the shore, the red torii gate standing in the lake and, on clear days, Mount Fuji in the distance. For most first-time visitors it is not a separate excursion but part of the classic Hakone loop: Hakone-Yumoto → Gora → Owakudani → Togendai → Lake Ashi → Hakone Shrine.

What Is Lake Ashi?

Lake Ashi, also called Lake Ashinoko, is a crater lake in the Hakone area. Visitors know it best for:

  • the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise
  • Mount Fuji views
  • Hakone Shrine
  • the lakeside torii gate
  • Moto-Hakone
  • Togendai

Is Lake Ashi Worth Visiting?

Yes. For a first-time Hakone day trip, I would include it.

The lake connects naturally with the Hakone Ropeway, Owakudani, Hakone Shrine and the sightseeing cruise, so it costs you very little extra travel to add.

More ways to reach Lake Ashi, Owakudani, Hakone Shrine and Mount Fuji — shared sightseeing days, pirate-ship cruise and ropeway packages, private cars and bullet-train returns from Tokyo.

Can You See Mount Fuji From Lake Ashi?

Yes, in clear weather. Lake Ashi is one of Hakone’s classic places to see Mount Fuji, but visibility depends heavily on the weather. Do not make the whole trip depend on it.

Where Is the Best Mount Fuji View at Lake Ashi?

Good views can open up around:

  • Togendai
  • Moto-Hakone
  • the sightseeing boats on the lake

If Fuji is visible, take your photos while you can. Cloud can move in quickly.

Hakone Sightseeing Cruise

The easiest way to experience Lake Ashi is on the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise. For most visitors it is not only a scenic cruise but useful transport across the lake, which is why it fits so well into a one-day itinerary.

Guided tours handle the cruise in different ways. The H.I.S. Fuji and Hakone tour with a bullet-train return includes the cruise ticket. The Clover Travel day trip and the TAIHOU shared sightseeing tour include a one-way ropeway ticket but charge the cruise as an extra. Our cruise and ropeway comparison sets them side by side.

What Is the Hakone Pirate Ship?

The boats on the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise are often called pirate ships because of their elaborate historic-style design. For families in particular, the crossing can be one of the most memorable parts of the day, and our Hakone with kids guide covers how the rest of a family day fits around it.

Is the Lake Ashi Cruise Worth It?

For first-time visitors, yes. It gives you:

  • lake scenery
  • possible Mount Fuji views
  • an enjoyable boat ride
  • transport across the lake
  • easy access toward Hakone Shrine

Where Should You Board the Lake Ashi Cruise?

If you are following the classic route from Owakudani, Togendai is usually the most convenient place to board. The sequence is:

Owakudani → Hakone Ropeway → Togendai → Lake Ashi cruise

Where Should You Get Off?

For most first-time day-trippers, the southern end of the lake is the most useful, because it puts you close to Hakone Shrine. Depending on the service and route, you will use the piers at Moto-Hakone or Hakone-machi.

Togendai

Togendai sits at the northern end of Lake Ashi, where the Hakone Ropeway, local buses and the sightseeing cruise meet. It is the point where mountain sightseeing turns into lake sightseeing without any awkward transfer.

Moto-Hakone

Moto-Hakone is close to:

  • Hakone Shrine
  • the lakeside torii
  • walking routes along the water
  • restaurants and cafés

For many visitors it becomes the last major sightseeing stop before returning toward Hakone-Yumoto.

Hakone Shrine

Hakone Shrine is one of the main reasons to visit the Lake Ashi area. It stands among tall cedar trees close to the lakeshore, and its red torii gate standing in the water has become one of Hakone’s defining images.

Is the Torii Photo Worth Queuing For?

If you have plenty of time, wait. If you are trying to complete a full Hakone day trip, I would not give up a large part of the afternoon just to stand directly beneath the gate.

Lake Ashi + Hakone Shrine: How Much Time Do You Need?

Allow roughly 1.5 to 2 hours for the southern end of the lake if you want to get off the cruise, walk along the shore, visit Hakone Shrine and see the torii.

Lake Ashi and the Hakone Ropeway

These two work very well together. The classic sequence is:

Sounzan → Owakudani → Togendai → Lake Ashi

The ropeway carries you down toward the lake, and the cruise continues the journey across it. Our Hakone Ropeway guide covers the Sounzan to Togendai leg, including the stop at Owakudani.

Lake Ashi From Tokyo

Most visitors do not travel straight from Tokyo to Lake Ashi. They make it part of a wider Hakone trip, and one scenic route is:

Tokyo → Hakone-Yumoto → Gora → Owakudani → Togendai → Lake Ashi

Our Tokyo to Hakone transport guide compares the ways of getting to Hakone-Yumoto in the first place.

Can You Visit Lake Ashi Without Doing the Ropeway?

Yes. You can reach the lake by road and bus. That is useful if the ropeway is closed, if you dislike heights or if you are short on time.

Is Lake Ashi Included in the Hakone Freepass?

The lake itself has no admission fee, and the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise is covered by the Hakone Freepass. Our Hakone Freepass guide explains what else the pass covers.

Can You Visit Lake Ashi for Free?

Yes. There is no general admission fee to walk around Lake Ashi. You pay only for specific experiences or transport, such as the sightseeing cruise.

Is Lake Ashi Good With Children?

Yes. The pirate-style sightseeing boats make it particularly enjoyable for families.

Can You Walk Around Lake Ashi?

You can walk along sections of the shore, but walking around the whole lake is not how most day visitors see it. Combine shorter walks around Moto-Hakone and Hakone Shrine with the cruise and public transport instead.

Lake Ashi in Fall

Fall is one of the most attractive times to visit, when the hills around the lake can turn red and gold. The catch is popularity: it is also one of the busiest times of year on the loop.

Lake Ashi in Winter

Winter can be excellent for long-distance views. The colder, drier air often improves your chances of seeing Mount Fuji clearly. Dress warmly, especially on the open deck of the boat.

What if Mount Fuji Is Hidden?

Enjoy the lake anyway. Lake Ashi still gives you a mountain lake, the sightseeing cruise, Hakone Shrine, forest scenery and lakeside walks.

Lake Ashi or Kawaguchiko?

Choose Lake Ashi if you want a broader Hakone sightseeing day with the ropeway, Owakudani, Hakone Shrine and the cruise.

Choose Kawaguchiko if Mount Fuji views are the main point of your trip. If you want some of each, the Clover Travel day trip continues from Hakone to Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai, closer to Mount Fuji.

Lake Ashi or Owakudani?

You should not normally have to choose. They connect naturally through the Hakone Ropeway, and a good itinerary includes both.

How Long Should You Spend at Lake Ashi?

For a typical Hakone day trip, 2–3 hours including the cruise and Hakone Shrine is a good target.

Is Lake Ashi Worth a Day Trip From Tokyo?

Lake Ashi on its own is probably not the reason I would travel all the way from Tokyo. Lake Ashi as part of Hakone absolutely is. Combine it with the Hakone Ropeway, Owakudani and Hakone Shrine and you have one of the most varied day trips available from Tokyo. Our one-day Hakone itinerary puts all four in order.
