Hakone in December 2026: Weather, Mt Fuji Views and Day Trip Itinerary
Plan a December 2026 Hakone day trip from Tokyo around the cold, the early sunset, the 7–24 December ropeway closure and Christmas, with two date-based routes.
December is a good month for a Hakone day trip from Tokyo. The mountains look wintry, the air is often clear enough for snow-capped Mount Fuji, and a hot-spring bath feels earned after a cold morning outside. December 2026 has one complication: the Sounzan–Owakudani section of the Hakone Ropeway is replaced by buses for maintenance from 7 to 24 December.
Check Availability
Tokyo: Mt. Fuji Tour, Hakone Ropeway, Owakudani, Lake Ashi — A shared Tokyo day trip linking Hakone Shrine, the ropeway and Owakudani with Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai. Cruise fare is extra.

Pick your route by your travel date. Before 7 December or after 24 December, follow the familiar loop through Gora, Owakudani and Lake Ashi. During the closure, visit Lake Ashi first and ride up to Owakudani from Togendai on the gondolas that keep running.
Quick answer: Hakone is worth a December 2026 day trip if you dress for the cold and leave Tokyo early. The Hakone-machi monthly average temperature in December is 3.4°C (38°F). The ropeway runs 9:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. in December, and its Sounzan–Owakudani section is closed from 7 to 24 December 2026. Mount Fuji shows on clear days only. Check live operating information the evening before you travel.
Hakone in December 2026 at a Glance
| Question | December 2026 answer |
|---|---|
| Is Hakone worth visiting? | Yes, for mountain scenery, a lake cruise, Hakone Shrine and an onsen. |
| Is it cold? | Yes. The official Hakone tourism site gives a December monthly average of 3.4°C for Hakone-machi; higher stations feel colder. |
| Is there snow? | Possible, not guaranteed. You may see snow on Mount Fuji with none on Hakone’s streets or paths. |
| Can you see Mount Fuji? | Sometimes. Clear winter days can be excellent, but nobody can promise a view on a chosen date. |
| Is the ropeway open? | Partly from 7 to 24 December: Sounzan–Owakudani is closed, and the Owakudani–Togendai side runs, subject to daily conditions. |
| What time does the ropeway close? | 4:15 p.m. (it opens at 9:00 a.m.). Do not leave your last mountain transfer until the final hour. |
| Do the Lake Ashi boats run? | Yes. The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise runs a winter timetable from 1 December to 19 March, subject to wind and fog. |
| How much time do you need? | A full day from Tokyo, leaving around 7 to 8 a.m. |
| What about Christmas? | 25 December is not a public holiday in Japan. Individual businesses can still change their hours. |
| Best approach | The standard loop outside the closure, the lake-first loop from 7 to 24 December. |
For a comparison of December, January and February, see our Hakone in winter guide. If your trip falls after New Year, our Hakone in January 2027 guide covers the Ekiden weekend and the second ropeway closure.
Is December a Good Time to Visit Hakone?
For many visitors, yes. The summer green has faded, the ridges stand out more clearly, the lake is quieter, and Mount Fuji looks its most striking with snow on its upper slopes. December suits people who come for scenery; there are no flowers, and the autumn leaves are mostly gone.
What December does well:
- Mount Fuji views: Winter often brings crisp air for long-distance views, although no forecast can promise a cloud-free summit.
- Owakudani: Steam from the volcanic valley shows up more in cold air, and the viewpoint is a highlight even without Fuji.
- Lake Ashi: The sightseeing boats and the forested shoreline feel a long way from Tokyo.
- Hakone Shrine: The lakeside torii and the cedar-lined approach suit a cold, quiet morning.
- Hot springs: An onsen is the best way to end a chilly day.
What makes December harder:
- The 7–24 December ropeway maintenance closure changes the usual route.
- Short days: sunset in the Hakone area is around 4:30 to 4:40 p.m. through most of December.
- Cold and wind at exposed stations, viewpoints and on the lake.
- The cruise runs on its winter timetable, so the last boat of the day matters more.
- Traffic and holiday crowds, especially in late December.
Our advice: keep the day to three or four main stops. Waiting for buses, boats and gondolas takes up a real share of a winter day in Hakone, and you cannot plan it away.
Hakone Weather in December: How Cold Does It Get?
Hakone’s height changes more than one headline forecast suggests. Hakone-Yumoto, where most trains from Tokyo arrive, sits low and is usually milder. Gora, Owakudani and parts of the Lake Ashi shore are higher or more exposed. A coat that feels fine at the station can feel thin on a windy gondola platform.
The official Hakone winter guide lists these December figures for Hakone-machi:
| Published figure | December value |
|---|---|
| Monthly average temperature | 3.4°C / 38°F |
| Highest figure listed | 14.5°C / 58°F |
| Lowest figure listed | −6.9°C / 20°F |
The high and low are the extremes the guide lists, not the usual daytime high and overnight low. Use the monthly average for packing and check the forecast for your travel day. The guide also notes that higher areas are especially cold.
Does it snow in Hakone in December?
It can, but do not book a December day trip expecting snow on the ground. The mountains get frost and occasional snowfall while lower areas stay clear. On shaded paths, steps and roads, ice is a bigger practical problem than snow.
If you want to see snow-capped Mount Fuji, December can deliver when the sky is clear. Snow across Hakone itself is a different expectation. If deep, dependable snow is the point of your trip, choose a ski area instead.
Will you need winter clothes?
Yes. Wear layers you can adjust as you move from a warm train to an outdoor viewpoint: a warm coat, an insulating mid-layer, a hat, gloves, a scarf and shoes with some grip. Bring an extra layer for Owakudani and Lake Ashi if you plan to stand on the boat’s open deck.
You do not need ski gear for ordinary sightseeing. Smooth-soled sneakers and thin city jackets are poor choices if the temperature nears freezing or the weather turns wet.
For photographers, thin gloves that work camera controls, a spare battery and a lens cloth help in cold wind. Keep spare batteries in an inside pocket, because cold drains them fast.
Can You See Mount Fuji From Hakone in December?
Yes, on a clear day. December often has good visibility, but Fuji can hide behind cloud even when Hakone is dry and sunny. A Tokyo forecast tells you little about what you will see from a mountain viewpoint.
The best places to try in December:
- Owakudani viewpoint: A wide mountain panorama, and worth the trip for the volcanic landscape alone.
- Hakone Ropeway between Owakudani and Togendai: Views toward Fuji and Lake Ashi when the gondolas run and the sky is clear.
- Moto-Hakone and the Lake Ashi shore: The classic lake-and-mountain photo when the view opens up.
- Lake Ashi sightseeing cruise: A view of the mountain from the water, depending on your route and the weather.
- Narukawa Art Museum’s panorama lounge: An indoor option above the lake for very cold days; Fuji still needs a clear sky.
Our guide to the best places to see Mount Fuji from Hakone compares these viewpoints in more detail.
Morning or afternoon for Mount Fuji views?
Take the first good view you get. Mornings often bring clearer air, but local cloud moves around. If Fuji is visible from the lake at 10 a.m., photograph it then; it may be gone by 2 p.m.
From 7 to 24 December, this matters for the route. You do not need to reach Owakudani first just because it is the famous Fuji viewpoint. The lake-first route lets you see the shore early and still ride the Togendai–Owakudani gondolas later.
What if Mount Fuji is completely hidden?
Carry on with your day. Hakone Shrine, the lake, the volcanic valley, the hot springs and the museums are all enjoyable without Fuji. Do not spend a one-day visit moving between viewpoints in the hope of outrunning the clouds.
Important: Hakone Ropeway Closure, 7–24 December 2026
This is the main planning detail for December 2026. The operator’s September 2026 maintenance notice sets out these dates:
| Dates | Sounzan ↔ Owakudani | Owakudani ↔ Ubako ↔ Togendai |
|---|---|---|
| 1–6 December 2026 | No scheduled closure | No scheduled closure |
| 7–24 December 2026 | Closed, replacement bus | Gondolas scheduled to run |
| 25–31 December 2026 | No scheduled closure | No scheduled closure |
The dates are inclusive, and only one section closes. Replacement buses link Sounzan and Owakudani in about 10 minutes and leave about every 15 minutes. Those are the operator’s planned figures, not guaranteed journey or waiting times, and the operator warns that the buses and the road can get very crowded.
Valid Hakone Ropeway tickets, including the Hakone Freepass and qualifying travel-agency tickets, are accepted on the replacement buses. Without a ropeway ticket, you take the regular Izuhakone Bus services instead.
The practical change for 7–24 December is to start with Lake Ashi, then Togendai, then the gondola up to Owakudani. That way you avoid the replacement-bus queue at Sounzan on the way up, which follows the operator’s own advice to approach Owakudani on the sections still running.
Our Hakone Ropeway closures 2026–2027 guide covers the replacement-bus rules, the alternatives and the January–February closure.
Check the same-day status as well. The running section can still stop for strong wind, bad weather, volcanic safety limits or other operational reasons. A maintenance notice is not a live departure board.
Best Hakone Day Trip Itinerary for 1–6 and 25–31 December 2026
When the whole ropeway is scheduled to run, use the standard mountain-first loop. You ride the most time-sensitive mountain transport first and work down to the lake and the shrine.
Route: Tokyo → Hakone-Yumoto → Gora → Sounzan → Owakudani → Togendai → Lake Ashi cruise → Moto-Hakone → Hakone Shrine → Hakone-Yumoto → Tokyo.
| Approximate time | Plan | Why this order works |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00–8:00 a.m. | Leave Tokyo, from Shinjuku if you use Odakyu. | An early start protects your daylight hours. |
| 8:30–9:30 a.m. | Reach Hakone-Yumoto and continue toward Gora. | You head uphill while everything is running. |
| 10:00–11:00 a.m. | Cable car to Sounzan, then the ropeway to Owakudani. | You try for Fuji and the volcanic valley before midday. |
| 11:00 a.m.–noon | Explore Owakudani; leave time for a snack and photos. | A proper stop without losing the afternoon. |
| Noon–1:30 p.m. | Continue to Togendai and take a Lake Ashi sightseeing cruise. | The cruise is both transport and a sight. |
| 1:30–3:00 p.m. | Explore Moto-Hakone and Hakone Shrine. | Enough daylight for the shrine and the lakefront. |
| 3:00–4:30 p.m. | Bus back toward Hakone-Yumoto, allowing for traffic. | You avoid starting the main return too late. |
| Evening | Train back to Tokyo. | Keep the return flexible if you have no reserved seat. |
These times are a sample plan, not real departures. Your starting station, traffic, queues and the cruise timetable will shift them.
What to prioritize
At Owakudani, allow 45 to 60 minutes for the views, the steam vents and a snack. Stay on the open paths and follow the posted access rules. The black eggs are a fun stop, but not worth missing your next connection for.
On Lake Ashi, the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise serves Togendai, Hakone-machi and Moto-Hakone. Its winter timetable runs from 1 December to 19 March, and some crossings take longer in winter. Check the route and direction before you board; not every boat goes straight to the pier you want.
At Hakone Shrine, allow 45 to 75 minutes for the forest approach, the main buildings and the lakeside torii. If the photo queue at the torii is long, photograph the gate from the shore; winter daylight is too short to spend your last hour in a queue unless that photo is your top priority.
Should you add the Hakone Open-Air Museum?
Only if art is a priority. It sits on the mountain railway between Hakone-Yumoto and Gora, but 1½ to 2 hours there makes a full loop much tighter. On a first December trip, choose between a relaxed classic loop and a proper museum visit.
The museum opens every day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m. Adult tickets cost ¥2,000 at the gate or ¥1,800 online. The Woods of Net, the children’s net play structure, is closed from 30 November to 4 December 2026. The outdoor sculpture areas get very cold, and individual works can be closed for weather or maintenance.
Best Hakone Day Trip Itinerary for 7–24 December 2026
During the maintenance period, reverse the direction and let the running ropeway section set the order.
Route: Tokyo → Hakone-Yumoto → Moto-Hakone and Hakone Shrine → Lake Ashi sightseeing cruise → Togendai → ropeway to Owakudani → replacement bus to Sounzan → cable car to Gora → Hakone-Yumoto → Tokyo.
| Approximate time | Plan | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00–8:00 a.m. | Leave Tokyo. | Aim to reach Hakone-Yumoto early. |
| 9:00–10:15 a.m. | Bus toward Moto-Hakone or Hakone-machi. | Allow time for traffic and for finding the right stop. |
| 10:15–11:30 a.m. | Explore Hakone Shrine and the lakeshore. | Photograph Fuji whenever the view is clear. |
| Late morning to early afternoon | Cruise across Lake Ashi to Togendai. | Confirm the boat actually goes to Togendai; winter sailings are not interchangeable. |
| Early afternoon | Ropeway Togendai → Ubako → Owakudani. | This is the scenic section still scheduled to run. |
| By about 2:00–2:30 p.m. | Visit Owakudani and start back on the replacement bus. | Do not leave the bus until the final hour of service. |
| Mid-afternoon | Replacement bus to Sounzan, cable car to Gora, train to Hakone-Yumoto. | Congestion can delay the bus a lot. |
| Evening | Return to Tokyo. | Leave a generous buffer before a reserved train. |
The trade-off: this route gives you the open ropeway section and the lake without relying on the replacement bus to reach Owakudani. You still need that bus after Owakudani if you return via Sounzan and Gora, and a long queue there can upset the end of the day.
Safer alternative: Lake Ashi and Hakone Shrine without Owakudani
If the weather is poor, you have small children, or bus queues would spoil the day, take a shorter route:
Tokyo → Hakone-Yumoto → Moto-Hakone → Hakone Shrine → Lake Ashi shore or a short cruise → bus back to Hakone-Yumoto → Tokyo.
You skip the ropeway and Owakudani, and with them the December replacement-bus bottleneck. Use the spare time for a long lunch, an onsen or a lakeside walk. There is no need to force the full loop when the weather or transport makes it uncomfortable.
If you only want Owakudani and not the lake, you can go up through Gora to Sounzan and take the replacement bus to Owakudani. The operator does not recommend this approach during the closure because of the expected congestion, so go early and leave plenty of time, or choose a different outing.
Things to Do in Hakone in December
1. Ride the Hakone Ropeway where it is operating
The ropeway is one of Hakone’s signature rides, passing over the volcanic landscape with possible Mount Fuji views. In December it runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.; the maintenance closure and the weather on the day can cut that back.
2. Visit Owakudani’s steaming volcanic valley
Owakudani is nothing like a city day out. The landscape is dramatic even in cloud, although poor visibility hides the distant views. Dress warmly, because the viewing platforms are exposed to wind. Stay in the permitted visitor areas and follow any gas safety instructions.
3. Take a winter cruise on Lake Ashi
The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise’s pirate-ship-style boats link the lake piers. Most one-way crossings take about 25 to 35 minutes, but the winter timetable is different and some trips take longer. Check the actual departures, the pier you need and the forecast before you set off.
Lake Ashi also has a second operator: the Izuhakone sightseeing boats, which serve Hakone-en and Kojiri on the other side of the lake. They have their own routes, timetables and tickets, so standing at a Lake Ashi pier does not mean any boat there accepts your pass.
4. Walk through Hakone Shrine’s forest
The big red lakeside torii draws the photographers, but the cedar-lined paths, lanterns and stairs are just as good. The shrine is an easy stop to pair with the lake. In icy or wet weather, take care on the stone steps and sloping paths.
Our Hakone Shrine and Lake Ashi torii gate guide covers directions and how long to allow.
5. Warm up in an onsen
A day-use hot spring is a welcome change after cold sightseeing. Many are near Hakone-Yumoto, Gora or inside hotels, but day-use access, opening hours, tattoo rules and booking rules vary. Check the specific bath; a hotel onsen does not always take visitors who are not staying the night.
If an onsen is a must, plan a lake-and-onsen or museum-and-onsen day instead of squeezing a bath into a full mountain loop. Our Hakone onsen day trip guide compares the options.
6. Visit the Hakone Open-Air Museum
The museum suits art lovers and gives you a plan B if Mount Fuji is hidden. It combines a large outdoor sculpture park with indoor galleries. Bring a coat for the outdoor sections, and expect some play areas to close in bad weather.
7. Enjoy a slower afternoon in Hakone-Yumoto
If the mountains get too cold or transport is disrupted, finish in Hakone-Yumoto instead of heading for another distant stop. Browse the souvenir shops, eat a warm meal and find a bath before your train home. It can be the most relaxing part of a busy December day.
Hakone in Early, Mid or Late December: Which Dates Are Best?
| Travel window | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| 1–6 December | The standard full loop, weather permitting. | The ropeway closes earlier than in summer. |
| 7–24 December | The lake-first route, the running Togendai–Owakudani gondolas, and quieter plans away from the closure. | Sounzan–Owakudani closed; replacement buses can be crowded. |
| 25–29 December | The full route, scheduled to run again. | Holiday demand makes some transport and hotels busier. |
| 30–31 December | Year-end sightseeing, an onsen and possibly the full loop. | Check year-end hours and transport schedules; not every service runs a normal weekday timetable. |
For the full classic loop, go on 1–6 December or 25–31 December. Even then, neither clear weather nor normal operation is guaranteed. If you are set on going between 7 and 24 December, use the lake-first plan.
Is there autumn foliage in early December?
You may find some color left in sheltered or lower spots, but not peak foliage. The official seasonal guide puts Hakone’s autumn-color season from early October to early December, varying by place and year. For red-and-gold scenery, late October or November is a safer bet; our guide to a Hakone day trip in autumn covers when each area turns.
Hakone on Christmas Day, 25 December 2026
25 December is not a public holiday in Japan, so a Christmas Day trip to Hakone works like any other weekday trip. The ropeway maintenance closure ends on 24 December, which puts 25 December outside it. That helps if riding the whole route is your priority, though daily service still depends on the weather.
Christmas in Japan also feels different from a European or North American holiday. Most restaurants stay open, but do not assume a special menu, winter illuminations or holiday hours without checking the venue. Attractions, onsen and hotels may post their own year-end notices.
A practical Christmas Day plan is the standard loop, with a reserved Romancecar seat if you value the convenience, or a lake-and-onsen day if you prefer a slower pace. If you travel on 31 December, recheck opening times and your return train closer to the date.
How to Get From Tokyo to Hakone in December
Option 1: Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku
The reserved-seat Limited Express Romancecar suits visitors staying near Shinjuku. Direct trains reach Hakone-Yumoto in about 80 to 90 minutes, depending on the service. You pay the limited-express fee on top of your base fare or pass.
Check the official Romancecar timetable and booking site for your date. The limited-express fee from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto is ¥1,200 one way for adults, on top of the ¥1,270 base fare.
Option 2: Regular Odakyu trains
Regular Odakyu trains cost less than the Romancecar but take longer and usually involve a change. They suit budget travelers who can start early. Check whether your train runs via Odawara and where you change for Hakone-Yumoto.
Option 3: Shinkansen to Odawara
From Tokyo Station or Shinagawa, the Tokaido Shinkansen to Odawara and a local train on to Hakone-Yumoto can be quicker, depending on where you stay. It is not automatically the best value, and not every Shinkansen stops at Odawara, so check the service and the fare.
Our Tokyo to Hakone train prices and times guide compares the routes.
Should you rent a car in December?
For a first December visit, public transport is simpler. A car gives a group some flexibility, but mountain roads can be icy or congested, and parking near the popular sights is limited. If you drive, check the forecast, road restrictions and winter-tire rules; a standard rental car is not always fitted for snow or freezing roads.
How Much Does a Hakone Day Trip Cost in December 2026?
Your costs depend mostly on your transport and on whether you do the full loop, only Lake Ashi, or a guided tour.
| Cost item | What it means for your trip |
|---|---|
| Hakone Freepass from Shinjuku | ¥7,100 for adults for the two-day pass. It works for a single day too, but compare it with separate fares. |
| Hakone Freepass from Odawara | ¥6,000 for adults for two days. It does not cover the Shinkansen or any Tokyo–Odawara train. |
| Romancecar fee | ¥1,200 each way from Shinjuku, on top of the fare or pass. |
| Hakone Open-Air Museum | ¥2,000 for adults at the gate, ¥1,800 online. |
| Food and drinks | Lunch, drinks and perhaps a snack at Owakudani; prices vary by venue. |
| Onsen or guided tour | Extra unless the ticket says it is included; compare the current price and inclusions. |
An adult leaving from Shinjuku with the ¥7,100 Freepass and a Romancecar seat each way (¥1,200 per trip) pays ¥9,500 before meals and admissions. Fares can change, so check them when you book.
Is the Freepass worth it during the ropeway closure? It can be, if you use several covered services, including the running ropeway section and the replacement bus. A shorter shrine-and-onsen day is often cheaper on separate tickets. Our Hakone Freepass guide shows how to compare.
The Freepass covers named Hakone transport. It does not include museums, every bus line, every boat operator on the lake, or the Romancecar fee.
Guided Hakone Tours From Tokyo in December: Are They Worth It?
A guided day trip makes sense in December if you would rather not juggle transfers, short daylight and replacement buses. A listing that says “Hakone Ropeway” or “Lake Ashi cruise” still cannot promise both will run on your date.
Before booking, check:
- Which stops are included. Owakudani, a ropeway ride and a Lake Ashi boat trip are three separate inclusions.
- What the tour does from 7 to 24 December: whether it uses the running ropeway section, swaps in another stop or changes the order.
- Whether gondola and boat tickets are included. Some tours sell them as extras.
- What happens in strong wind or bad weather, including the refund and replacement-activity terms.
- Where the tour finishes. Some end at a different Tokyo station or return by Shinkansen.
- How much walking there is. Hakone Shrine has steps, and December weather makes long walks less pleasant.
A shared coach tour costs less and handles the logistics, though you lose control of the timing. Our pick on GetYourGuide is the TAIHOU Mt. Fuji, Hakone Ropeway, Owakudani and Lake Ashi tour (from $54 per person, 4.6/5 from 8,523 reviews). The Clover Travel Mt Fuji and Hakone tour (from $49 per person, 4.8/5 from 1,187 reviews) covers a similar mix for a little less, but its Lake Ashi boat fare is not included. If you would rather come back by bullet train, the Mt. Fuji and Hakone tour with return by Shinkansen (from $115 per person, 4.2/5 from 1,787 reviews) does that.
A private driver suits families, people with limited mobility and anyone who wants to set the route, though it cannot beat the weather or the traffic. Our pick is the private custom tour with an English-speaking driver (from $309, 4.8/5 from 816 reviews). For a slower private day built on an onsen and art, the HavenJapan private Fuji and Hakone tour (from $317 per person, 5.0/5 from 148 reviews) is the alternative.
Our guides to the best Mt Fuji and Hakone tours from Tokyo and which Hakone tour to book compare these in more depth.
What if the Ropeway or Lake Ashi Cruise Is Canceled?
Scheduled maintenance is only one reason transport changes in December. High wind, fog and safety limits can stop the gondolas or the boats at short notice.
If the ropeway stops: do not count on a replacement bus for an unscheduled suspension. Ask station staff about the current route and check the operator’s status page. If reaching Owakudani means a long detour, spend the day on Lake Ashi, the shrine, Hakone-Yumoto or a museum.
If the lake cruise is suspended: you can still reach Moto-Hakone or Hakone-machi by bus and walk the shore. If the weather around the lake is poor, a museum or an onsen is more comfortable.
If Mount Fuji is hidden: keep the sights you came for, and do not chase a view across several distant places. The scenery, the shrine and the volcanic valley are still worth the trip.
If snow or ice disrupts the buses: avoid tight train connections. Check local transport notices, think about staying around Hakone-Yumoto instead of going higher, and change plans if conditions become unsafe.
Common December Planning Mistakes
Following an old loop map without checking the date. The usual clockwise loop is not the best route from 7 to 24 December 2026.
Treating 4:15 p.m. as a time to start mountain sightseeing. It is when the ropeway stops in December, not a time to arrive.
Planning five or six major stops. The lake, the ropeway, Owakudani, the shrine and a museum are too much for a winter day once transfers and queues are counted.
Expecting snow everywhere. Snow on Fuji does not mean snow in Hakone-Yumoto or beside Lake Ashi.
Assuming every Lake Ashi boat takes the same ticket. The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise and the Izuhakone boats are separate; check which pier your boat serves.
Booking a fixed return train too early. Buses back from the mountains and the lake run late, especially during maintenance and busy periods.
Checking only the Tokyo weather. Look at Hakone and higher-altitude conditions, especially wind and freezing temperatures.
Frequently Asked Questions About Hakone in December
Is Hakone too cold in December?
Not for most people who are fine with winter sightseeing, but it is properly cold. The official Hakone tourism site gives a December monthly average of 3.4°C for Hakone-machi, and the higher stations and the lakeshore feel colder in the wind. Pack warm layers, not Tokyo clothes.
Can I do Hakone as a day trip from Tokyo in December 2026?
Yes. Leave Tokyo early, choose three or four main stops and check the day’s operating information. From 7 to 24 December, use the lake-first route if you want to ride the running gondolas to Owakudani.
Is the Hakone Ropeway closed in December 2026?
One section is: Sounzan–Owakudani, from 7 to 24 December 2026, with replacement buses. The Owakudani–Ubako–Togendai section is scheduled to keep running, subject to the weather and daily conditions.
Is Hakone open on Christmas Day 2026?
Yes. 25 December 2026 is outside the ropeway maintenance closure, and Christmas is not a public holiday in Japan. Check the hours and any special notices for the places you plan to visit.
Is December a good month to see Mt Fuji from Hakone?
Yes, on a clear day. Winter often brings good visibility and a snow-capped summit, but nobody can promise a view on a given date. Try Owakudani, the running ropeway section and the Lake Ashi shore.
Does it snow in Hakone at Christmas?
It can snow in December, mostly higher up, but it is not reliable. Check a local forecast close to your date and expect icy paths even when there is little snow to see.
Are Lake Ashi pirate ships running in December?
Yes, on the winter timetable that starts on 1 December, subject to wind, fog and other safety limits. Confirm the departure pier and the pier where your boat arrives.
Is the Hakone Freepass worth buying for just one day?
Often for the full loop, not always for a shorter trip. The pass is sold with two- or three-day validity but works for a single day. During the closure, passholders can ride the replacement bus; add up the covered rides and compare them with single fares before you buy.
Should I visit Hakone or Lake Kawaguchi in December?
Choose Hakone for a varied day with volcanic scenery, the lake, the shrine, the ropeway and an onsen. Choose Lake Kawaguchi if close-up views of Mount Fuji matter most. Neither place guarantees clear skies or snow, and the transport plans differ; our Hakone or Mt Fuji comparison sets them side by side.
Can I visit Hakone without the ropeway in December?
Yes. A good day can center on Lake Ashi, Hakone Shrine and a hot spring, or on Gora, a museum and an onsen. You do not need the full loop for Hakone to be worth the trip.
What time should I leave Tokyo for Hakone in December?
Around 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. if you want several sights. Sunset is around 4:30 to 4:40 p.m. in December, so leaving Tokyo near lunchtime leaves very little time in the mountains.
Final Verdict: Is Hakone Worth Visiting in December 2026?
Yes, if you plan the day around the December timetable. A snow-capped Mount Fuji, the steam at Owakudani, Lake Ashi and Hakone Shrine make a fine change from Tokyo, and an onsen rounds the day off.
Your main choice depends on the date:
- 1–6 or 25–31 December: Follow the standard mountain-first loop, if the whole ropeway is running on the day.
- 7–24 December: Take the lake-first route and the running Togendai–Owakudani gondolas, and expect a replacement bus if you continue to Sounzan.
- A poor-weather day: Choose Lake Ashi and the shrine, or a museum and an onsen, without forcing a mountain transfer.
Check the forecast and the live transport status the evening before and again on the morning you travel. Pick the plan that still works if the weather or a bus queue changes your day.
