Best Mt Fuji & Hakone Tours From Tokyo

Open the itinerary before you book. Tours with almost identical titles split the day between Fuji and Hakone very differently, and the cruise is not always included.

Updated 23 October 2026

A Mt Fuji and Hakone day tour lets you see both areas from Tokyo without working out trains, buses and connections yourself. For most first-time visitors, the TAIHOU shared tour is the place to start: it has the largest review base and pairs the Hakone Ropeway and Owakudani with Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai. Book the H.I.S. tour instead if you want the Lake Ashi cruise included and a bullet train home, or a private car if you are four or more.

Tokyo: Mt. Fuji Tour, Hakone Ropeway, Owakudani, Lake Ashi — A shared Tokyo day trip linking Hakone Shrine, the ropeway and Owakudani with Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai. Cruise fare is extra.

Pоwered by GetYourGuide

The two areas are close enough to combine, and different enough that linking them on public transport in one day gets complicated. A good tour links several of these:

  • Mount Fuji
  • Fuji-area viewpoints
  • Oshino Hakkai
  • Owakudani
  • Hakone Ropeway
  • Lake Ashi
  • Hakone Shrine
  • a bullet-train return to Tokyo

The itineraries vary more than their titles suggest. Some tours focus on Fuji and only touch Hakone. Others give you the full Hakone combination of the ropeway, Owakudani and Lake Ashi.

Other Experiences

Other experiences you might enjoy

More ways to reach Lake Ashi, Owakudani, Hakone Shrine and Mount Fuji — shared sightseeing days, pirate-ship cruise and ropeway packages, private cars and bullet-train returns from Tokyo.

1. Mt Fuji & Hakone 1-Day Bus Tour With Bullet Train Return

The H.I.S. Mt. Fuji and Hakone tour with return by bullet train (from $115 per person, 4.2/5 from 1,787 reviews) is the strongest all-round choice if you want both Mount Fuji and Hakone with the rides paid for. It combines Mount Fuji, Hakone scenery, the Hakone Ropeway and a Lake Ashi cruise, then sends you back toward Tokyo by Shinkansen. Both the ropeway and cruise tickets are included, which is not true of the cheaper shared tours.

Why choose it?

It solves two problems at once:

  1. getting between Fuji and Hakone efficiently
  2. avoiding the long road journey back into Tokyo at the end of the day

The train is welcome after a long sightseeing day. Know how it works before you book: the guided part ends at Odawara, and you ride a non-reserved Shinkansen seat to Tokyo on your own with the included ticket. Our bullet-train tour page explains that last leg, and our guide to reaching Hakone by Shinkansen yourself covers the independent version.

Best for

  • first-time visitors
  • travelers with only one free day
  • anyone wanting Fuji plus the main Hakone sights
  • travelers who want the ropeway and Lake Ashi
  • people who like the idea of returning by Shinkansen

Main downside

It is a long, structured day. You are seeing two destinations, so you will not get much free time at each stop. Its 4.2/5 rating is also lower than the other shared tours here, and many low scores mention the pace and the independent train leg.

2. Mt Fuji Hakone Tour With Cable Car and Cruise

The Clover Travel Mt Fuji and Hakone tour (from $49 per person, 4.8/5 from 1,187 reviews) suits you if the Hakone part of the day matters as much as Fuji. Its itinerary includes Lake Ashi, the Hakone Ropeway and Owakudani. Despite the cruise in its title, the listing includes only a one-way ropeway ticket; you pay the Lake Ashi pirate-ship fare yourself.

Why choose it?

It covers three of the experiences we would put first on a first Hakone visit: Owakudani, the ropeway and Lake Ashi. You get more than a drive through Hakone.

Best for

  • travelers particularly interested in Hakone
  • visitors wanting the ropeway
  • visitors wanting a Lake Ashi cruise, paid on the day
  • anyone who wants volcanic scenery as well as Fuji

Main downside

Check the exact booking option carefully. The listing offers several variants, and inclusions can differ. It also lists exclusions for travelers over 70 and those with mobility impairments.

3. Mt Fuji + Hakone Shrine + Lake Ashi + Ropeway + Oshino Hakkai

This is one of the broadest itinerary types, and the TAIHOU shared tour (from $54 per person, 4.6/5 from 8,523 reviews) is the one to book. Its route covers:

  • Hakone Shrine
  • Lake Ashi
  • Hakone Ropeway (one way, included)
  • Owakudani
  • Lake Yamanaka
  • Oshino Hakkai

Why choose it?

You get both sides of the trip. The Hakone section includes cultural and volcanic sights, while the Fuji section adds village and lake scenery. More than 8,000 travelers have reviewed it, which makes it the best-known shared departure on this list.

Best for

  • travelers wanting the most variety
  • Hakone Shrine
  • Owakudani
  • Fuji village scenery
  • people who want more than a Fuji photo stop

Important booking detail

Check the exact selected option before paying. The pirate-ship cruise and lunch are not included, so budget for both if you want them.

4. Private Mt Fuji & Hakone Customizable Tour

If you are traveling as a family or group, price a private car before booking individual coach seats. The Mount Fuji Discoveries private custom tour (from $309 for a group of up to six, 4.8/5 from 816 reviews) includes hotel pickup and an English-speaking driver. Select itinerary B for Hakone.

Potential stops can include:

  • Mt Fuji 5th Station
  • Lake Kawaguchi
  • Chureito Pagoda
  • Oshino Hakkai
  • Lake Ashi
  • Hakone Shrine
  • Hakone Ropeway
  • Owakudani

You agree the route according to time, weather and your interests. Ropeway and boat tickets are extra.

Why choose a private tour?

A private tour gives you flexibility. If Mount Fuji is clear early in the morning, your driver can head for the best viewpoints first. If Fuji is hidden, you can spend more of the day in Hakone. You also avoid waiting for a whole coach group at every stop.

Best for

  • families
  • groups of four or more
  • older travelers
  • photographers
  • travelers with specific priorities
  • anyone who wants hotel pickup
  • people who dislike large coach tours

Main downside

The main downside is price. For one person or a couple, a group tour is usually much cheaper: two people sharing the $309 car pay about $155 each, against $54 for a TAIHOU seat. For six people the gap closes to about $52 each. Our private Hakone tours page compares the private options in more detail.

5. Private Mt Fuji & Hakone Tour

The HavenJapan private Fuji and Hakone tour (from $317 per person, 5.0/5 from 148 reviews) focuses on an onsen and art instead of the full sightseeing loop. Its fare is per person, unlike the Mount Fuji Discoveries group price, and entry fees are extra.

Private tours differ a lot in:

  • vehicle size
  • whether the driver is also a guide
  • pickup area
  • included tolls
  • entrance fees
  • itinerary flexibility
  • number of Fuji and Hakone stops

For private tours in particular, compare the actual itinerary as well as the headline price.

6. Mt Fuji & Hakone Day Trip With Bullet Train Option

You may see this format listed as a traditional coach tour combining Mount Fuji, Hakone and Owakudani, with the option of returning by bullet train. On GetYourGuide it is the same H.I.S. listing as tour 1, sold with different options, so compare those options rather than treating it as a separate tour. Itinerary, lunch and return options differ by selection.

Best for

  • travelers who want a traditional coach-tour format
  • Mt Fuji and Hakone in one day
  • an optional bullet-train return

7. Fuji + Lake Ashi + Oshino Hakkai Tour

Not every traveler cares about the Hakone Ropeway or Owakudani. If you mainly want Fuji scenery plus Lake Ashi, look for a simpler itinerary. We did not find a GetYourGuide listing built only around these stops; the TAIHOU tour above covers Oshino Hakkai and Lake Ashi along with the ropeway.

Who should choose this?

Someone who wants:

  • Lake Ashi
  • Fuji Five Lakes scenery
  • Oshino Hakkai
  • several Fuji photo stops

Who should not?

If your priority is the Hakone Ropeway, Owakudani or the full Hakone sightseeing loop, choose another tour.

What I Would Look for in a Mt Fuji & Hakone Tour

The words “Mt Fuji & Hakone” in the title are not enough. Look at the individual stops. For a balanced first-time tour, we would want at least the following.

Fuji section

One or two strong Fuji-area stops, such as:

  • Fuji 5th Station when the road is open
  • Lake Kawaguchi
  • Lake Yamanaka
  • Oshino Hakkai
  • another established Fuji viewpoint

Hakone section

At least two of:

  • Owakudani
  • Hakone Ropeway
  • Lake Ashi
  • Hakone Shrine

A tour that gives you 10 minutes beside Lake Ashi is not much of a Hakone visit. For two tours with near-identical names and very different days, our Mt Fuji and Hakone in one day guide sets out what fits.

Ropeway or Lake Ashi Cruise: Which Matters More?

If you have to choose, pick the Hakone Ropeway and Owakudani. They give you something quite different from the Fuji section of the day:

  • volcanic landscape
  • a ride above the valley
  • steaming vents
  • mountain scenery

The Lake Ashi cruise is enjoyable but easier to drop on a tight itinerary. If you can, choose a tour with both. Our ropeway guide and pirate-ship cruise guide cover each ride.

Is Hakone Shrine Worth Including?

Yes, but it takes time. A tour that includes Fuji, Owakudani, the ropeway, the cruise, Hakone Shrine and Oshino Hakkai is already very full. A tour with more stops is not automatically better, and a shorter stop list can give you a better day. The Hakone Shrine guide explains what you see there.

Mt Fuji 5th Station or Oshino Hakkai?

They offer different days. Choose 5th Station if you want to travel partway up Mount Fuji itself. Choose Oshino Hakkai if you want village scenery, spring ponds, Fuji views from below and traditional-looking landscapes.

Group Tour or Private Tour?

For one or two travelers, a group tour usually costs far less per person. For four to six travelers, compare private pricing carefully. A private tour makes more sense when you value hotel pickup, flexibility, less waiting, your own choice of stops and traveling only with your group.

Bus Return or Bullet Train Return?

The bullet-train option helps at the end of a long day. Traffic approaching Tokyo in the late afternoon can be slow, and a Shinkansen return from Odawara takes the road out of the last leg. You make that train journey without the guide.

Is Lunch Included?

Sometimes. Do not assume it is. TAIHOU and Clover leave meals to you, and H.I.S. includes lunch only on the lunch option. Lunch stops also take time out of an already packed day.

How Long Should the Tour Be?

About 10 hours is normal for a combined Mt Fuji and Hakone day from Tokyo; the TAIHOU, H.I.S. and both private listings all state 10 hours, and traffic can stretch it. A much shorter tour claiming to cover both deserves a closer look.

Can Any Tour Guarantee Mount Fuji?

No. Booking photos are not a promise of what you will see. Mount Fuji visibility depends on the weather and cloud. A good combined tour still gives you Owakudani, the lake and the shrine when the mountain stays hidden.

Best Tour if Mt Fuji Is Your Main Priority

Choose a Fuji-focused tour, not necessarily a Fuji and Hakone tour. The Mount Fuji Full-Day Highlights Sightseeing Trip (4.5/5 from 5,328 reviews) visits Lake Kawaguchi, the five-story Chureito Pagoda, Oshino Hakkai and a seasonal Fuji stop. You give up Hakone, but you get more chances to see and photograph Fuji. If you are still undecided between the two areas, read Hakone or Mt Fuji.

Best Tour if Hakone Is Your Main Priority

Choose a tour that includes:

Owakudani, the Hakone Ropeway and Lake Ashi

Skip any product that drives past Hakone or makes a short lake photo stop. Our cruise and ropeway tours page lists the tours that include the rides.

Best Tour for Families

A private tour suits families well. You control toilet breaks, lunch timing, pace and the number of stops. With younger children, dropping three attractions can make the day better. Our Hakone with kids guide has more on pacing.

Cheapest Tour vs Best Value

Do not pick the cheapest fare without checking what it covers. The $54 TAIHOU seat and the $115 H.I.S. seat look far apart until you add the cruise fare the cheaper tour leaves out. A modest price difference can buy you a ropeway ticket, the cruise, lunch, a faster return or a smaller group. Compare what is included.

GetYourGuide or Viator for Mt Fuji & Hakone?

Both platforms sell Fuji and Hakone tours, and their listings differ, so you can check both before you book. Compare:

  • the exact Hakone stops
  • the exact Fuji stops
  • group size
  • cancellation terms
  • return transport
  • private and group options

Which Tour Would I Put First on the Page?

For a combined day that matches the search most closely, we would look first at a tour with:

  • Mt Fuji
  • Hakone
  • the ropeway
  • a Lake Ashi cruise
  • a bullet-train return

The H.I.S. tour ticks all five. The alternatives depend on what matters more to you:

  • more Hakone: the Clover Travel tour, with the cruise fare paid separately
  • private tour: the Mount Fuji Discoveries car
  • lower price and the most reviews: the TAIHOU tour
  • more Fuji viewpoints: the Mount Fuji Full-Day Highlights trip

That gives you five different days, not five near-identical coach tours. For a shorter shortlist organized by priority, including onsen days, see which Hakone tour to book.

Final Advice

Do not book a Mt Fuji and Hakone tour on its title. Open the itinerary. For a first visit, look for a day that gives you:

one or two strong Fuji stops, plus Owakudani, the Hakone Ropeway and Lake Ashi.

That is enough. A well-paced tour with six proper stops beats ten minutes at each of ten places. Check the selected option and date before paying, because inclusions change between variants. If you would rather skip a tour altogether, compare a guided tour with doing it yourself.
